Modernising a large container terminal requires significant investment across several interconnected areas. At Baltic Hub in Gdańsk, electrification, rail capacity and digitalisation will now be advanced through a single investment programme.
Baltic Hub has secured PLN 220.6 million under Poland’s European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and Environment programme. The grant covers almost 40% of a wider investment estimated at PLN 554 million.
The programme will support the electrification of terminal operations, the expansion of rail infrastructure and the deployment of advanced digital and monitoring systems. Planned investments include additional quay and yard cranes, a fleet of electric prime movers and works on the terminal’s railway siding apron.
Together, these measures are expected to increase terminal capacity, improve the efficiency of intermodal transport and reduce the environmental footprint of operations. The investment will also reinforce Baltic Hub’s role as a major gateway connecting Poland and Central and Eastern Europe with international maritime trade.
The project illustrates how targeted public funding can help make major port-modernisation projects viable and mobilise substantially larger investments. Electrification, rail connectivity and digitalisation should not be considered separately, as progress in each area contributes to the efficiency and competitiveness of the terminal as a whole.
