
On 4 June 2026, DP World announced the launch of a feasibility study exploring how Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology could contribute to meeting the long-term energy needs of the Port of Constanța.
The study, conducted in partnership with the French research organisation CEA and the TerraWater Institute, will assess future energy demand linked to port operations, electrification, onshore power supply and industrial activities. It will also evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of integrating nuclear-based solutions into future low-carbon energy systems.
As ports continue to expand their role as energy and logistics hubs, access to reliable, affordable and low-carbon energy is becoming an increasingly important component of decarbonisation and operational resilience strategies.
The initiative illustrates the growing focus on innovative energy solutions capable of supporting the future development of ports and their surrounding industrial ecosystems.
Following the FEPORT Summer General Assembly, members also had the opportunity to visit DP World’s facilities in Constanța and gain first-hand insight into the company’s integrated port and logistics operations. The visit showcased the strategic importance of Constanța as a multimodal gateway connecting maritime, rail and road transport networks, as well as the contribution of private investment to strengthening connectivity and supply chain efficiency across the region.
