
Digitalisation has made European ports faster and more connected, but it has also created new dependencies and vulnerabilities across logistics chains. Strengthening resilience therefore requires a detailed understanding of how port operations and digital systems function in practice.
During a meeting hosted by Deltalinqs in Rotterdam, FEPORT members exchanged views with representatives of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT) on security and resilience in ports.
Deltalinqs presented the work being undertaken within the Port of Rotterdam’s port and industrial cluster to strengthen preparedness and operational continuity. Its presentation highlighted that resilience and competitiveness cannot be addressed separately: companies must be able to anticipate and respond to disruptions without undermining the efficiency and attractiveness of the port.
Particular attention was given to information technology, port community systems and Portbase, which connect terminal operators, shipping companies, customs authorities and other logistics actors. These systems are essential to the efficient movement of cargo, but their interconnected nature also means that a disruption affecting one participant can have consequences throughout the port community and the wider supply chain.
FEPORT underlined the considerable efforts already being made by European port and terminal operators to protect their infrastructure, systems and operations. Security and resilience should not be treated solely as compliance requirements, but as shared objectives requiring cooperation between companies, port authorities, national administrations and European institutions.
Future EU initiatives should build on the systems and partnerships already functioning in ports, avoid duplicative requirements and remain proportionate to the risks faced by different operators. Regular dialogue with the sector will be essential to ensure that European ports remain among the most secure, resilient and competitive links in global supply chains.
