HHLA advances remote-controlled rail handling – Hamburg

HHLA has commissioned its first remote-controlled rail gantry cranes at Container Terminal Altenwerder, marking a further step in the terminal’s automation programme.

The project combines a newly installed crane designed for remote operation with the modernisation of an existing unit. Crane operators will control the equipment from ergonomically designed workstations inside the terminal building, following dedicated training on the new systems.

Spanning nine railway tracks, the new equipment is expected to improve the efficiency and productivity of rail handling at the terminal. The investment is particularly significant for Hamburg, where rail plays a central role in moving containers between the port and the European hinterland.

The project shows how automation can support operational performance while contributing to safer working conditions and the evolution of port-related job profiles.
