On February 28, Commissioner Hoekstra answered a question of Spanish MEPs Juan Ignacio Zoldo Álvarez (EPP) and Borja Giménez Larraz (EPP) on ETS Maritime and its impacts on the competitive position of ports in Spain and the EU at large.
The MEPs, in their question, pointed to service announcements by Maersk in Hapag Lloyd, which decided to replace Algeciras and Valencia in Spain with other non-EU Mediterranean ports, and asked what measures the Commission intends to take to combat carbon leakage.
Commissioner Hoekstra, in his reply, pointed to the already existing mitigation measures which exclude neighbouring container transhipment ports such as Tanger Med and East Port Said from the ETS definition of the port of call. He also pointed out that the Commission is required to propose additional mitigation measures in case any evasive behaviours are found.
