Maritime security, connectivity and supply chain resilience featured prominently in recent discussions held under the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Speaking at a debate in the European Parliament, Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna emphasised the growing importance of safeguarding critical transport infrastructure, maintaining reliable trade routes and strengthening Europe’s connectivity in an increasingly complex international environment.
The intervention highlighted the strategic importance of maritime transport for Europe’s economy, energy security and the availability of essential goods. Particular attention was given to the need to diversify transport routes, strengthen cooperation with trusted partners and reduce vulnerabilities affecting international supply chains.
Reference was also made to ongoing work at EU level aimed at improving transport connectivity, reinforcing critical infrastructure protection and enhancing preparedness against emerging risks. The discussion underlined the contribution of initiatives such as TEN-T, the Connecting Europe Facility and Military Mobility to strengthening the resilience of European transport networks.
The importance of maritime security and freedom of navigation was also reaffirmed as essential elements for ensuring the uninterrupted flow of trade and maintaining Europe’s connectivity with global markets.
For ports and terminal operators, these developments further illustrate the increasingly strategic role of maritime infrastructure in supporting trade, connectivity and the resilience of European supply chains.
