Shore power station at HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort
On March 23, 2026, the European Commission opened a call for evidence on the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) in the context of the upcoming review which, according to the Regulation, is due for the end of 2026.
AFIR lays down requirements for the provision of shore-side electricity in TEN-T ports for cruise-, passenger – and container ships above 5,000 gross tonnes. This review will consider the appropriateness of a potential extension of the scope of the provisions regarding shore-side electricity. Furthermore, the review will consider measures to accelerate the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure for shipping as well as the rollout of electric charging points and hydrogen refueling stations for heavy-duty vehicles.
The Call for evidence will remain open until April 20.
