EU-wide – Updated MED regulation and implications for ports – Brussels

On 23 September, 2025, the updated Implementing Regulation (EU 2025/1533) amending the Marine Equipment Directive (2014/90/EU) entered into force. The revision introduces new testing and performance standards for marine safety and lifesaving equipment, while allowing certain older-type approved equipment to remain in use until 2028 under transitional rules. The aim is to harmonise safety standards across the EU fleet and ensure consistency with international conventions.

For ports and terminals, the update has operational implications. While shipowners are responsible for compliance, ports are at the frontline of port state control, inspection regimes, and emergency preparedness. Non-compliant vessels could face clearance delays, creating knock-on effects for port operations. It will be important that the transition to new standards is managed with clear guidance and predictable timelines, so that docking services, rescue gear coordination, and vessel safety checks can be aligned without disruption.
