On May 20, 2026, the European Parliament held a debate on the revision of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) and its role in supporting European competitiveness.
During the debate, Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra stressed the importance of reconciling climate ambition, competitiveness and Europe’s economic resilience. He notably underlined the need to bring “climate, competitiveness and independence much more hand in hand” while preserving a level playing field for European industries.
Discussions also focused on the importance of accelerating investments linked to the clean transition and ensuring that European industries maintain their competitiveness in an increasingly challenging global environment. Particular attention was given to the role of ETS revenues and the need to strengthen support for innovation and industrial transformation.
The exchanges reflected the growing importance of balancing climate objectives with industrial resilience, investment capacity and Europe’s strategic autonomy, including in sectors linked to transport, logistics and maritime activities. In this context, FEPORT continues to underline the importance of ensuring that future policy developments preserve the competitiveness and connectivity of European ports and logistics chains.
