FEPORT attends stakeholder dialogue on ETS organised by MEP Liese – Brussels

On September 24, FEPORT attended an online stakeholder dialogue on the EU ETS revision organised by rapporteur MEP Dr. Liese.

The remote gathering followed the publication of MEP Liese´s draft report on September 11th.

Although the meeting was dedicated to the wider topic of the ETS revision and featured discussions on, for example, the linear reduction factor, the conditionality of free allowances and the expansion to extra-EU aviation, many participants also commented on ETS Maritime. Individual shipping lines and trade association representatives  called for the reinvestment of ETS revenues back into the maritime sector and increased funding for sustainable maritime alternative fuels.

FEPORT´s intervention highlighted the need to take effective measures to combat carbon and business leakage at the expense of ports in the EU, particularly calling for amendments to article 12.3-g in view of applying the cargo-based measure that allows reductions to shipping lines based on the share of non-EU destined containers carried on board to outbound voyages as well.

PSA Europe also attended the call and particularly warned against the loss of competitiveness of ports handling relay transhipment volumes, supporting the same amendments to article 12.3-g to remedy the situation.

FEPORT looks forward to further engaging with policy makers to find solutions that help safeguarding the competitiveness of ports in the EU while securing compliance with Europe´s climate targets for 2030 and beyond.
