FEPORT Submits its Response to Call for Evidence on European Climate Resilience and Risk Management Initiative – Brussels

On September 4th, FEPORT submitted a reply to the Call for Evidence on the upcoming initiative on European Climate Resilience and Risk Management. The initiative was already announced in President von der Leyen’s Political Guidelines and will be formally presented in Q4 2025. The initiative seeks to set out a comprehensive framework and action plan to support EU Member States in preparedness and planning and ensure regular science-based risk assessments.

FEPORT reply underlined the need for making port and related infrastructure ready -e.g. quays, breakwaters – for the expected increasing prevalence of climate related events. At the same time, climate risks should be addressed upstream and downstream ports, for example, by taking measures to enhance the preparedness and resilience of waterway infrastructure in the face of droughts. Finally, it is key to ensure energy resilience, considering the growing electrification of ports and transport networks at large, meaning outages can pose risks to the operational continuity of ports. Grid updates and expansions should be done taking into account climate change, and battery storage solutions and renewable energy production should be leveraged to enhance grids’ capacity to absorb shocks.
