On June 5th, FEPORT attended the 81st meeting of the Stakeholders Advisory Group on Maritime Security (SAGMAS). SAGMAS is an expert group where the European Commission gathers input from stakeholders on issues related to maritime and port security.
During the 81st meeting, an update was provided on issues related to safe navigation such as the ongoing Red Sea crisis and the latest trends on piracy. The Commission also elaborated on the aspects of the port strategy relevant to SAGMAS by discussing, for example, upcoming initiatives on background checks for port workers and planned initiatives to enhance cybersecurity for the maritime sector and ports.
FEPORT looks forward to the discussions on and implementation of these initiatives. It is key to improve the security and resilience of ports but measures should be taken based on a pragmatic approach taking into account the operational and economic realities of our sector as well as the availability and wellbeing of the required workforce.
