IMO advances discussions on global Net-Zero Framework for shipping – London

In May 2026, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) continued discussions on the development of a global framework aimed at supporting the decarbonisation of international shipping and achieving net-zero emissions objectives.

During the latest discussions within the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), delegations reiterated the importance of rebuilding consensus on global shipping emissions measures while ensuring a level playing field for the international maritime sector.

The exchanges also highlighted concerns regarding the potential fragmentation of regulatory frameworks and the need to ensure coherence between regional and international approaches to maritime decarbonisation.

The ongoing IMO discussions are particularly relevant for European ports and maritime stakeholders as international shipping continues to face increasing environmental and investment requirements linked to the energy transition.

The debate further reflects the growing importance of developing globally coordinated measures capable of supporting decarbonisation objectives while preserving the competitiveness and operational efficiency of maritime transport and logistics chains.
