Mediterranean Sulphur Emission Control Area enters into effect

On May 1, 2025, the Mediterranean Sea Emission Control Area (ECA) for sulphur oxides entered into effect, making the Mediterranean Sea the fifth ECA worldwide under MARPOL Annex VI.

Ships in the Mediterranean must reduce the sulphur content limits of their operations to 0.10% mass by mass (m/m) as compared to 0.5% m/m outside of Emission Control Areas.

The measures will significantly reduce air pollution from ships, thereby reducing negative impacts on human health and the environment. The measures are also expected to reduce haze caused by ships, increasing visibility and reducing the risks of accidents.
