MEP submits question to the Commission on scope of ETS Maritime – Brussels

On the 13th of May, MEP Asger Christensen (Renew, Denmark) submitted a priority question for written answer on EU ETS for maritime transport to the European Commission.

The question related to the scope of ETS since, at current, only ships above 5000 gross tonnage are covered by the Directive.  MEP Christensen therefore called attention to possible distortions of competition caused by the exemption from EU ETS of ships between 400 and 5000 gross tonnage, and asked the Commission whether it is willing to include smaller ships in ETS maritime as of 1 January 2027.

MEP Christensen finally asked about a possible extension of the Innovation Fund in order to subsidise the retrofitting of low energy efficiency vessels that have high GHG emission ratings.
