Spanish MEP submits questions on ETS Maritime regarding funding and impacts on EU ports’ competitiveness

On October 15, MEP Giménez Larraz (EPP, Spain) highlighted in a written question to the Commission the uneven playing field that EU ports are facing vis-a-vis particularly North African facilities that do not apply any requirements under the ETS and FuelEU Maritime initiatives.

He also stressed that the Tanger Med port received EIB support, whereas the ports of Damietta (Egypt) and Nador (Morocco) received loans and grants from the EBRD.

MEP Giménez Larraz therefore asked the Commission about its views regarding the allocation of European resources to third-country ports that directly compete with EU ones, and informed what measures the Commission plans to take to prevent losses in competitiveness of Spanish and EU ports in relation to third-country competitors.

On October 14, he also submitted a question for written answer regarding the use of revenues generated by ETS and FuelEU Maritime, asking the Commission for guarantees to ensure that the revenues generated via these pieces of legislation will be reinvested in the maritime sector such as for the development of renewable and low-carbon infrastructure and technologies.
