EU Transport Ministers met in Luxembourg on 8 June 2026 to discuss the future competitiveness of the European transport sector and exchange views on measures aimed at strengthening the resilience of transport networks across the Union.
The debate took place in a context where transport continues to play a central role in supporting economic growth, industrial competitiveness and the functioning of the Single Market. Ministers stressed the importance of maintaining efficient and well-connected transport networks capable of facilitating the movement of goods and passengers while supporting the Union’s broader economic and sustainability objectives.
Discussions covered a wide range of issues, including infrastructure development, multimodal connectivity, the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure and the need to improve the efficiency of transport operations across Europe. Several delegations also highlighted the importance of reducing administrative burdens and accelerating permitting procedures for strategic transport projects.
Particular attention was given to the role of transport infrastructure in supporting Europe’s resilience and long-term competitiveness. Ministers recognised that reliable transport corridors and modern infrastructure remain essential for ensuring connectivity between regions, supporting trade flows and strengthening Europe’s position in an increasingly competitive global environment.
The discussion also underlined the close interlinkages between transport, energy and industrial policies. As Europe continues to pursue its decarbonisation objectives, transport infrastructure will play a key role in enabling the deployment of cleaner technologies and supporting the transition towards more sustainable mobility solutions.
For ports and terminal operators, these discussions are particularly relevant given their role as multimodal hubs connecting maritime, rail, inland waterway and road transport networks. Efficient port infrastructure and connectivity remain essential for facilitating trade, supporting industrial activity and enhancing the resilience of European logistics chains.
