This position paper, dated November 15, 2021 , highlights FEPORT’s support for the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) proposal, recognizing that the availability of refueling and recharging infrastructure is crucial for decarbonizing all transport modes. FEPORT emphasizes that if infrastructure is provided by private parties, EU funding should be utilized to ensure an adequate return on investment.
The document stresses the importance of consistency across various EU environmental and climate legislations to promote cleaner fuels like Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). FEPORT specifically proposes a tax exemption or preferential tariff for LNG used in maritime transport beyond 2025 to stimulate its adoption.
Furthermore, FEPORT praises the alignment of the Energy Taxation Directive (ETD) proposal with AFIR regarding Onshore Power Supply (OPS), which allows a transitional 10-year exemption for electricity supplied to vessels on intra-EU voyages. They suggest extending this zero-rate to vessels undertaking extra-EU voyages as well.
