EU Commission proposal for a revised Renewable Energy Directive (RED III)

This position paper, dated November 15, 2021 , conveys FEPORT’s support for increasing transport targets within the context of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) review. FEPORT specifically proposes the inclusion of cargo handling in these targets, recognizing it as an essential component of the transport sector.

The document suggests amending the RED III Directive proposal to incorporate low-carbon fuels, assigning them a lower weight in both EU and national renewable energy targets. This approach aims to encourage Member States to stimulate the adoption of low-carbon fuels, thereby contributing to the broader decarbonization of transport and other economic sectors.

FEPORT highlights that any efforts to increase the uptake of clean energy sources should aim to bridge the price gap between fossil and renewable/low-carbon alternatives, with Member State support schemes playing a crucial role. Additionally, the paper asserts that the decision to promote a specific fuel or energy source should primarily be based on its capacity to reduce CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions.
