To allow terminals and ports to be successful in their electrification efforts while contributing to other EU policy objectives, it is crucial that policy makers adapt the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) and FuelEU in the framework of their reviews as well as the texts that are part of the Grid Package. To allow terminal operators to contribute to all mentioned policy objectives simultaneously, financing will be crucial as well. FEPORT recommends particularly paying attention to aspects related to taxation, funding, State aid, governance and permitting.
The focus of this paper therefore goes beyond AFIR as we need a holistic approach to achieve a successful rollout of OPS while ensuring a wider decarbonisation of maritime transport and ports.
