Publication of PAS 4000:2026 Advances Digitalisation of Cargo Handling Facilities – London

On February 2026, the British Standards Institution (BSI) officially published PAS 4000:2026, a new specification aimed at supporting the digitalisation of cargo handling facilities and logistics operations. The document was developed with the active involvement of industry stakeholders, including experts from TIC4.0, and provides a structured framework to facilitate interoperable data exchange across terminal environments.

PAS 4000 introduces a semantic model designed to standardise communication between digital systems used in cargo handling operations. By establishing a common language and shared reference points for operational data, the specification seeks to ensure that information exchanged between equipment, software platforms and maintenance systems is interpreted consistently, irrespective of technological architecture or supplier. The model is intended to support interoperability between automated and semi-automated systems across terminal processes, equipment monitoring and logistics operations.

For terminal operators and technology providers, the development of harmonised digital standards represents an important step in addressing long-standing challenges related to system integration and data fragmentation. Improved interoperability between digital tools can contribute to enhanced operational transparency, reduced ramp-up times for infrastructure projects and more effective coordination between port stakeholders, including shipping lines and logistics service providers.

As ports and terminals continue to undergo rapid digital transformation, initiatives that promote common technical frameworks and data harmonisation are expected to play an increasingly important role in ensuring efficient and secure supply chain operations. The PAS 4000 specification will be subject to a formal review within two years, allowing for further refinement in line with technological developments and evolving operational requirements.
