Representatives of more than 25 companies grouping global container terminal operators and their equipment and solutions suppliers held the second plenary meeting of TIC 4.0 (Terminal Industry Committee 4.0) at FEPORT offices in Brussels on December 7th, 2018.

The first plenary meeting had already adopted an initial set of governance rules and a roadmap for the Committee. Fundación ValenciaPort has been retained to provide back office support in the organization and documentation of Committee’s meetings and activities.
Mr Boris Wenzel, Terminal Link, was elected as Chairman, Mr Frank Kho was appointed as the Coordinator of TIC 4.0, and a steering committee has been formed to also include FEPORT (The Federation of European Private Port Companies and Terminals) and PEMA (The Port Equipment Manufacturers Association).
The second plenary meeting allowed participants to reiterate their support to TIC 4.0’s objectives which go far beyond just agreeing on standards for communication between ships and terminals.
TIC 4.0 has been established to allow a closer technical interaction between terminals and manufacturers with the objective of the elaboration of industry standards that will favor the development of Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence as well as further technological innovations for the whole sector.
The first objective of TIC 4.0 will be to delineate a corpus of definitions regarding concepts and technical terminology that are specific to the container handling industry to facilitate comparatives about technical specifications for equipment, bring about objective measures of performance of equipment and constitute an important milestone towards the elaboration of standards for the industry to achieve further efficiencies. Those efficiencies will have positive cascading effects on the whole logistics chain.
A large part of the plenary meeting has been allocated to the split of work between different working groups which will start the work in December 2018.
The 5 work streams with proposed chair are:
- 1. STS – SC: Chair: Eurogate - Vice Chair: Liebherr
- 2. Rail CRMG – TT: Chair: DP World - Vice Chair: Konecranes
- 3. RTG – TT: Chair: Terminal Link – Vice Chair: RBS
- 4. SC– SC: Chair : APMT - Vice Chair: Kalmar
- 5. TT- Chair: ECT –Hutchison - Vice Chair: Konecranes
The different working groups will:
- Outline generic description of operational process for given module within its boundaries
- Define topics/needs/KPIs for module as per process description, with focus on:
- Performance & efficiencies
- Energy consumption
- Safety
- Data
- Structure the output of the exercise as per following hierarchy:
- Basic (Business) needs
- Operational processes
- Technical assets
- Technological tools
The outcome and progress report of the work of the working groups will be made available during the next Plenary Meeting which will take place in Marseille on February 8th 2019 at the CMA CGM Headquarters.
