FEPORT welcomes IMO Secretary General’s proposed theme for 2017 World Maritime Day: "Connecting Ships, Ports and People"

Addressing the IMO Council, meeting for its 116th session at IMO Headquarters in London last July 7th, 2016, Mr. Kitack Lim has said:
"The maritime sector, which includes shipping, ports and the people that operate them, can and should play a significant role helping Member States to create conditions for increased employment, prosperity and stability ashore through promoting trade by sea; enhancing the port and maritime sector as wealth creators both on land and, through developing a sustainable blue economy, at sea”.
“It is a very positive signal to the wider maritime community that M. Kitack Lim has sent by proposing as a theme for 2017 World Maritime Day: "Connecting Ships, Ports and People" says Lamia Kerdjoudj-Belkaid, Secretary General of FEPORT.
“We cannot but support M. Lim’s inclusive approach aiming at involving all actors shipping, public and private port stakeholders with the objective of identifying and promoting the best cooperative practices” continues Lamia Kerdjoudj-Belkaid.
Last March 1st, 2016, in the framework of his participation to the 2016 ICHCA conference about 'Bigger Ships, Greater Challenges', M. Lim addressed the important topic of “safe, secure and efficient world maritime trade in the context of new global challenges” and already committed to strive to make the best use of his professional knowledge of the maritime and port industries to promote cooperation between all maritime stakeholders.
“Private Port Operators and terminals are satisfied to see that M. Lim’s statement has translated into a concrete proposal. They are fully committed to play their role to facilitate trade and contribute to economic growth and therefore subscribe to the objectives of the 2017 World Maritime Day”.
“It is essential not to forget that 90% of goods are carried by vessels and that once they reach ports they still need to continue their journey until final destination i.e. end customers. In this respect, as suggested by M. Lim, the role of the other parties of the supply and logistics chain and more particularly port stakeholders is crucial” concludes Lamia Kerdjoudj-Belkaid.
