EU Commission publishes annual report on CO2 Emissions from Maritime Transport – Brussels

On March 3, the European Commission published the sixth report on CO2 emissions from ships entering and leaving the European Economic Area ports. The data used in the report collected under the EU MRV regulation between 2018 and 2023 allow us to track the evolution of emissions and energy efficiency in shipping over the years.

The report noted that 2023 saw a reduction of CO2 emissions of shipping by 7.9%, although this is partially due to reduced activity levels associated with restrictions on goods’ transport to Russia. 91% of the total marine fuels used in 2023 were still fossil fuels, including LNG, for which consumption records were broken in 2023.

The report also includes a breakdown of emissions per ship type, concluding that container ships, oil tankers, and bulk carriers were the highest emitters in 2023.

The report can be accessed here.
